About ELNet

The UBC Educational Leadership Network (ELNet) is an informal group committed to supporting EL faculty members, sharing information, and celebrating EL work. Please feel free to reach out to us for information about activities, events, and mentoring!

Message from co-chairs + Mandate and Vision

This year, ELNet is working in the theme of “gentle advocacy” – continuing to support EL faculty members, listening to their concerns, and sharing those concerns with others at UBC (including senior administration). We’re not a formal advocacy group, but we’re happy to help spread the word around both campuses!

Mentorship Program

ELNET facilitates mentorship for educational leadership faculty, including preparing your dossier for promotion and tenure, helping you prioritize and determine focus of EL activities, and simply making connections with other EL faculty at UBC! If you are interested in being mentored, please send an email to sally.willis-stewart@ubc.ca or robert.campbell@ubc.ca and we will find a wonderful mentor to match you with.

STLHE BC AND YUKON TEACHING & LEARNING LEADERSHIP REGIONAL WORKSHOP

Do you want to strengthen and grow your leadership abilities in teaching and learning in higher education?

This workshop is for individuals in formal and informal leadership roles who want to explore and build on their leadership within higher education. In this session, participants will begin to develop a leadership philosophy and join a supportive network of peers to share opportunities and challenges in teaching and learning leadership. We define teaching and learning leadership to mean initiatives that you are currently involved in that contribute to the enhancement of teaching and learning within post-secondary environments.

This workshop is designed for individuals who are in full-time or part-time faculty or staff roles broadly related to the fields of educational development, faculty support, and/or instructional design and who also have an interest in serving in a leadership capacity. As a regional STLHE event, participation is limited to individuals working in British Columbia or the Yukon. 

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to

1. Categorize the areas of teaching and learning leadership where you contribute most actively;
2. Map the ways in which your values and teaching and learning leadership align;
3. Begin to articulate a philosophy of teaching and learning leadership; and
4. Determine next steps for advancing your own philosophy of teaching and learning leadership

The TEACHERS Project ~ Research

We are inviting you (and your class) to be a participant in a research project involving faculty training and support to integrate targeted wellbeing interventions into your class.  Research very strongly supports that student wellbeing, more specifically addressed and supported in classrooms, is linked to learning. This project aims to help you do that with little effort. If you are tight on time, have limited “know how” or resources for student wellbeing, and/or are keen to help students be well and learn, it would be wonderful to have you be a part of our research project.  Please email sally.willis-stewart@ubc.ca or jannik.eikenaar@ubc.ca for more information.

Potential Funding Opportunity (MURPH)

Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Projects in Health (MURPH) is an undergraduate research program at UBC Okanagan, aiming to offer a unique cross-disciplinary platform for undergraduate students to engage in academic research, while also receiving professional training through custom-designed workshops. The core component of MURPH includes project teams comprising multiple undergraduate students and faculty members across different disciplines working together on applied health research projects.

We are inviting all faculty members at UBC Okanagan to submit their project proposals to MURPH for the academic year of 2020-2021. The selected projects will receive salary support to hire undergraduate research assistants.

New this year: Given the current pandemic, preference will be given to projects that are fully digital in nature and can be performed remotely by students. Topics of interest should be relevant to health, but may contain any theme (e.g. biomedical, public health, remote health, medical education, design of personal protective equipment, novel diagnostic tools, sharing data and management, etc.).

New Open Access Book from CEL

Writing about Learning and Teaching in Higher Education:

Creating and Contributing to Scholarly Conversations across a Range of Genres

Writing about Learning and Teaching in Higher Education offers detailed guidance to scholars at all stages—experienced and new academics, graduate students, and undergraduates—regarding how to write about learning and teaching in higher education.

It evokes established practices, recommends new ones, and challenges readers to expand notions of scholarship by describing reasons for publishing across a range of genres, from the traditional empirical research article to modes such as stories and social media that are newly recognized in scholarly arenas.

The book provides practical guidance for scholars in writing each genre—and in getting them published.

SoTL

Celebrate SoTL Events

We are excited to announce that the third annual UBC Celebrate Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) event will be held virtually this year, with events (e-poster and interactive panel) spread across two days: October 22-23. This will allow SoTL practitioners across UBC to share their stories from practice, engage in dialogue around teaching and learning topics, and network with colleagues across disciplines. The event also helps potential and existing SoTL grant holders become familiar with SoTL work that is taking place at UBC. Read about the 2019 event.

SoTL and Student Well-Being Panel Discussion

Date/time: Thursday October 22nd 12:30-2pm, Friday October 23rd 10-11:30AM (via zoom)

Many instructors are evaluate their classroom practices and often focus on students gaining skills or changing their attitudes about learning. Knowledge of such attributes can be better scaffolded by attention to student well-being and its impact on teaching and learning. During this interactive panel, attendees will learn more about well-being research with student populations, and how to integrate a SoTL lens in their own well-being inquiries.

Featuring SoTL activity across UBC, this session will provide an opportunity to learn about SoTL projects and disseminate project outcomes, successes and pitfalls. For those considering embarking in researching their teaching practice, this session will be a unique opportunity to engage with colleagues and learn from their SoTL experiences (solicit feedback, disseminate results, invite collaboration, etc.).
