McPhee, S. R., Lyon, K., Briseno-Garzon, A., Varao-Sousa, T., & Moghtader, B. (2020). Student voices on remote education in the COVID-19 era: Recommendations for fall based on student self-reported data. Institute for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. https://doi. org/10.13140/RG, 2(28175.20641).
At the start of the pandemic, they conducted a large, anonymous survey of students at UBC to learn more about their experience of online learning. Based on over 550 responses, they found found that:
- In general, students felt supported by their instructors during this tumultuous time.
- Students highly valued clear, consistent communication and standard sets of tools in their courses
- Peer communication and interaction was highly valued but difficult to achieve
- Flexibility plus accountability was a desirable mix for online learning
- And more!
The report also includes student voices directly, with many interesting quotes and food for thought. Check out the full report which included detailed breakdowns and more recommendations for Fall Teaching.
