New Community of Practice: Innovative Teaching Techniques and Tools

Join us for a new community of practice at UBC-O in September, with a discussion on innovative teaching techniques and tools. Our topic for this session will be Active Learning with a lens on Student Engagement.

During this session we will consider:

  • How can active learning play the best role in both student engagement and the learning of course content?
  • What counts as student engagement?
  • What types of student engagement contribute to the learning of course content?

Below are some brief articles the co-facilitators are considering to help guide discussion:

  1. The first article discusses Student Participation vs. Engagement.  The authors briefly define behavioral engagement, emotional engagement and cognitive engagement.  In addition, the authors discuss non-verbal attentiveness which they feel could also be considered a valuable form of engagement that contributes to student learning.
  • What does it mean to be engaged? The engagement of student engineers with sustainability: a literature review investigating patterns and types of student engagement.  The authors look at 4 types of student engagement:
    • Engagement as Autonomy – a shift to self-sufficiency in learning, related to cognitive engagement, self-efficacy, self-regulation and self-motivation;
    • Emotional Engagement – involving student interest, enjoyment, a sense of belonging and belief in the value of topics being learned;
    • Inter-relational engagement – with peers and instructors, as well as with the institution;
    • Engagement as connection and disjunction – reflects students’ experiences of worldviews, expectations and norms that can influence student behaviours.

Session Dates and Format

Each 50-minute session will focus on a different innovative teaching technique and/or tool. The Faculty Facilitators will offer ideas, but the final topics will be determined by the community of practice members and will be announced via Teams and email communications.

In the first half of each session, one or two community of practice members will highlight innovative teaching technique(s)/tool(s) through their experiences (including a short demo) and insights (including relevant scholarly literature and/or lessons learned). In the second half of each session, everyone will engage in a collective inquiry and brainstorming of how to apply the technique(s)/tool(s) to their own contexts.

Sessions will occur monthly, on either a Tuesday or a Thursday, with alternating times to accommodate varied teaching schedules:

  • Thursday, September 19, 2024 … NOON – 12:50PM
  • Tuesday, October 22, 2024 … 11:00AM – 11:50AM
